At this weeks (Thur 17th) combined Pixar UGM and Rendersan there will be a special talk on how to save 50%-80% render times on your stereoscopic renders! Up till now if you were a newbie you mightn't know how to control this power within Pixar's RenderMan. So to make things easier a new Maya plugin (made in JAPAN!) will be explained by its creator Hiramitsu San.
I have been testing it this week and it is absolutely mind-blowing! -the guy is a savior.
I hold these meetings regularly but this weeks is not to be missed. It's going to be super informative if you are serious about rendering a LOT of stereoscopic data or want to relight scenes in Pixar's Renderman. Also you must NOT miss meeting Dylan's speech, he is flying all the way out from Pixar (Emeryville) just to meet you guy's so lets give him a warm welcome. Peter, from Sydney will also attend so we have two people to geek out!

http://www.rendersan.org/events/rendersan-5-with-pixar-ugmOh and we have a secret party later ..... :)
I opened the seminar at or favorite venue Silicon Graphics hall in Ebisu.
Officially released our new site http://www.rendersan.org. Had a little rant about how Pixar's RenderMan in particular has been the most if not only stable platform in my career. The PowerPoint I had prepared an hour earlier was a little rough but I think everyone got my idea of how RenderMan is not just a cash ROI but a training one as well.
More pictures here
Finished the talk with some woo factor showing my original MacRenderMan / Showplace / Typestry etc. floppies and original order forms from what seems eons ago.
Katsuaki Hiramitsu San followed up with his shading language 101 talk. Coding everything from scratch showing the "bare bones" of RSL and RIB. For most of the people at the meeting seeing RSL coded live was a first.
I later asked some of the more experienced RSL people what they thought and said it was refreshing to see a simple scene develop all written in Notepad.
Our special guest speaker Pixar's Peter Moxom then gave his virtual tour of Pixar with an excellent real time translation done by my good friend Akira Sugiyama.
Lots of great anecdotes and slides which satisfied all the Pixar maniacs in our audience which by the way numbered 58. Peter showed some clips from Pixar's UPcoming "Up" and explained a couple of RenderMan statistics about the film. He finished with some info about new releases.
Lastly a special talk was given by Silicon Graphics Japan about their latest hardware. I must give a special thanks to Silicon Graphics Japan for their support for our community. I hope to give a special report on some RenderMan and Silicon Graphics Japan combination's in the future.
After this great event we all had to PARTY TokyoGAF style at the Beer hall nearby
Keep your calendars open for 20th May 7pm
You may know I run a bunch of events for people in our field every 5-8 weeks in Tokyo. I will be combining 2 of them on the same day for next month.
RenderSan: the

and
Bernies monthly Tokyo film/CG/Game/(etc) makers dinner.
(I gotta get a name for that).

here here and
hereThe way I will work it is we will do the ultra geeky RenderSan session at 7pm. For those of you who just want to mingle and don't want to listen to RenderMan related things can attend the post RenderSan dinner at 9pm.
Like always I have special guests from overseas lined up one is from Pixar (no not last weeks GOD of RenderMan Tony) but someone who may have some Pixar goodies to share. The second guest is a wonderful Brit post genius (Apple silhouette CM) who survived Hollywood.
I am organizing the venue now. Those on my mailing list should receive an email within the week, if you are not on my mailing list you better get in touch.
Why am I doing it this way? So the 3d and post/CM people can meet new faces.

I had around 40 attend the meeting in Silicon Graphics hall at Garden place, which by the way is now my favorite venue in Japan (thank you so much SGI). Later 25 came out for beer consumption at the beer station nearby.
How good did it go? Well. we were ALL the last people in the beer hall, and we went out for more beer at an English pub nearby.
So to be honest I was incredibly happy that everyone got along had fun etc.....
Considering the extreme range of experience and company sizes, nobody is ever too proud to help our fellow RenderMen!

I know I haven't blogged for a month or so, which is unusual but I was incredibly busy. Back from LA I have been busy on a research project and a new film script. Anyway here is my Siggraph pics from last month in LA.
I started at the Pixar booth giving my blurb in Japanese on tuesday and English on Wednesday:

Getting ready:

then giving the JP speech:

The convention center where I gave it:

I also held the second Rendersan meet there:

A few fantastic guests showed like Tony Apodaca from Pixar, Ken Anjyo from OLM. Mr fantastic Joe Alter also gave a demo:

Later in the week Siggraph booked out part of the Dodger stadium for us - food booze etc..., where I caught a home run which was captured on the video screen!

I also gave a SRT at the Pixar group meet, I was totally tired & jet lagged by then. My talk was supposed to be on Prman for Python, it was later asked to be changed to a SRT, so far from being cool and zany, it was just a wacky tired guy giving a quick rundown of Prman for python! so it was more of a stupid rederguy laugh off but that was ok as the other speeches from the great SRT team blew everyone away!

On Saturday I hosted the first RenderMan® Community meeting of Japan, with much appreciated help from Yoshichika Shimamura and Naoki Kondo. It did not go entirely as planned, it was way better than I had expected!
I was expecting the usual unresponsive crowd, so I had 2 hours of blurb ready just in case.
Most of the group gave ideas, even disagreed at points so we ran out of time. In my wildest dreams I did not expect such reaction, it felt like a real community.
A lot was not voted for, but the main thing is the main structure was basically sorted out and I hope not to bore anyone too soon with much voting.
If you want to see what our group came up with look at the minutes at www.rendersan.org, I will be putting them up later in the morning.
Basically we voted on the name, structure, goals, and workings of our new community.
All three main RenderMan® vendors were there, and gave excellent input.
I was happy that everyone agreed it will be an open community, only restricting positions of power to vendors - in the interest of fairness.
An excellent point was made that my idea of allowing vendors to have some commercial input for hosting the group seemed a little cold.
Actually most people seemed happy to allow some commercial input if it was for the benefit of the community.
I may have been a little too much of a hippie in thinking the users would create a totally non-commercial group.
So we will be allowing vendors to add anything to our community. After all they are RenderMan® users too. The users also agreed that using a commercial venue was alright. Even when it came to funding people agreed a small fee was fine.
I had planned to give a small instruction on illumination loops and message passing, but time was against us. In the end we exchanged cards and about 20+ of us went out for a small after drinks party.
It was here over a few beers I got to explain a few of the tricks in the shader I handed out earlier. Everyone, agreed the party was the best thing since shadow maps!
After the party, the real hardcore amongst us went to a nearby darts bar. I think next time we shall plan the after party as it seemed like such a good idea.

In an effort to stimulate growth in the Japanese Rendeman user community I am proposing a new community.
the RenderMan® community of Japan.
==============================
■The goals I propose are:
To further the use and knowledge of the RenderMan® standard in Japan and for those with an interest of RenderMan® use in Japan.
By RenderMan® I mean the technical specification and not any particular version of RenderMan®, so I mean:
AIR, Aqsis, BMRT, Entropy, Gelato, Pixie, PRman, RenderDotC, 3delight
and pretty much anything that follows the RenderMan® standard. Also covering topics related to RenderMan® and the development around it for it for example:
C, C++, TCL, Python, Liquid, Renderfarms, GL tricks, DSO's, OS, converters, Hardware etc...
As a group our needs will be clearer to vendors of RenderMan®, they gain and we gain.
----------------------------------------------------
■The first meeting will be held on Saturday the 28th of June at 18:30.
For more details please RSVP <info(at)rendersan.org>
This will be an outline meeting the following will take place:
①List of the things you would like covered by this group.
②Vote for the leader(s) of this community.
③Outline our mission.
④And ..... meet other geeky people, like yourself.
----------------------------------------------------
■The second will be a special meeting in Los Angeles at this years Siggraph.
The meeting will be held on Thursday 14 August at 13:30.
Again for more details please RSVP <info(at)rendersan.org>
The Siggraph meeting will be primarily to involve Japanese RenderMan® users who are abroad and those who wish to use RenderMan® abroad. Also foreigners with an interest in this community are welcome to attend. Of course all community members are invited, so please attend!
==============================
※This entirely for non profit, currently paid for
by my own donations. Any corporation may attend,
donate etc., however I would like this to be
vendor/platform/Renderer neutral group. I do not
wish to promote my own or any other business in
this community, this is important so we can all
benefit in a fair manner.
==============================
The new web site is in bug testing right now, so expect a lot of changes in the coming weeks.
I will also be having a forum/mailing list so we can try to help out each other with problems that are Japanese specific or time critical.
-within reason of course.
I would also like to have a news area showing how people in Japan use RenderMan®. I would also like a private area for those who wish to work on community code, share images etc..
If possible for those who can help translate, I would like to have the site as multilingual as possible, so others from outside our community can understand the power of our work.
You can contact me regarding interest to join - yes its %100 free at

I was truly humbled by the wonderful community spirit that was shown at RenderSan.
Thank you so much Yosuke Katsura, David Lin, Jun Saito, and Syoyo Fujita for speaking with me at this months RenderSan.
And thank you so much SGI Japan for the BEST venue ever!
We had a turnout of around 40, not bad for a long weekend where about 20 couldn't make it. Next time lets make it the 60 it should have been ok!
Even my speech went sort of well(!!!!) and I am usually awful at speaking in front of large audiences! I may actually be getting the hang of this kinda thing after all.
We started off with Yosuke giving a demo with Maya for 3delight and Mayaman. He explained a little of rib and shader information, just enough so newbies wouldn't run and pro users understood the difference between converters.
Next up was David with his wonderful demo with Houdini - the great package that needs NO converter.

Then was me, I gave a small demo with 3delight for XSI Studio and RenderMan Pro Studio. I explained how with this wonderful standard you can intertwine all these 3d packages using rib. I read the animation from Davids Houdini demo and opened them up, and lit them in both XSI and Maya. If time permitted I was going to go on to 3 more demos in 3dsMax then Lightwave - but time was not on our side.

Next came some wonderful stuff from Sega. Jun showed and inspired us all how Sega uses Pixar's RenderMan to make the coolest game openings EVER.
Lastly was our special presentation from Fujita San. This is a guy who wrote his OWN RenderMan compliant renderer. Everyone was totally geeked out by this time especially when he showed his interactive GI tricks. - Genius!
Right after, most of us went out to the Ebisu beer hall nearby to have a chat and have fun. Attendees of my regular gatherings made everyone feel part of a true community.
We were the last in the hall on that Saturday night!
Some peoples reactions (with their permission):
from Hiroshi Chiyama san:
Mr. Bernard
I was happy to join RenderSan Meeting #3.It was so exciting.
To tell a truth, I've never used RenderMan and I only know
"It's world's best brilliant renderer :-)".
But, Demonstrations and SEGA's movie excited me.
Especially, I was surprised at particular function that
imports RIB File to scene dynamically. it's amazing!!
Thank you for opening such a wonderful meeting.
RenderSan Meeting #3

And

Announcing the third RenderSan meeting.
I promise this meeting will have something for everyone.
So if you are a novice or a pro, you will gain something from this event.
The fantastic schedule I have planned is to have a simple example
scene and convert it into renderman in many ways.
The presenters will use many different 3d packages, converters, and
renderman renderers.
So whatever pipeline you have used till now you can compare it, or if
you have never used renderman before this will be your chance to see
many ways to use it!
If you are a student we will show you free ways to use RenderMan. And
because RenderMan is a standard it is not very hard to change from a
free implementation to a commercial implementation.
If you are a manager we can show you ways to implement a proper render
pipeline, the standard which most blockbuster movies use.
All examples will be very simple so anyone can understand.
There will be an explanation in simple terms how you can mix packages
using RenderMan.
Like houdini dynamics but want to have a character in Maya and a
background in XSI? - no problem.
This is your chance to see a non-biased, non-commercial presentations
from our community.
And best of all there will be a party later so you can all meet other
renderman geeks.
You can forward this email to your friends if you think they are interested.

Outline of our community
"RenderSan, the RenderMan® comunity of Japan" as set out by the community June 2008
My name is Bernard Edlington I am the founder of this community, I was voted president by unanimous vote at the first meeting in June 2008.
My term will start from the third meeting which is due September 2008, as the first and second preliminary meetings were organized in advance.
Our long term goals are:
- To create the best RenderMan® community in the world, one which will make users want come to Japan to use RenderMan® with us.
- To join all RenderMan® users in Japan.
- To forge ties with Japanese RenderMan® users and other RenderMan® users around the world.
Our short term goals are:
- By Siggraph Asia 2009 (Japan) to have a meeting larger than the best and largest RenderMan® user meeting we know (Pixar's) which we estimate to be at 300.
- To recruit new users and show them that RenderMan® is the best rendering standard in the world.
These goals were agreed by the community at the first meeting, the short term goals I promise to achieve at or before Siggraph Asia 2009 in Japan.
The way we will run this community and achieve these goals is:
- As much as possible will be done via the internet.
- Some users prefer anonymity, or corporate anonymity so Bernard shall organize a web and forum where this is possible.
- The groups main language shall be Japanese, however where possible we will try to translate as much as possible into English, so users around the world can freely interact. Some meetings will have to be in English for example when foreign speakers are present.
- Membership is open to all people around the world, and leaders will be voted yearly. The only restriction being vendors may not take leadership positions.
- Forums and web communication restricts users to over 14.
- Vendors, dealers and other groups may freely take part in the community
- We are vendor neutral and wish to promote the RenderMan® as a standard in Japan, which means:
- Vendors may promote their products at the meetings
- As a group we will not favor any one product over another
- Vendor time will be given on a first come first served basis
- As long as it is in the spirit of the groups non profit aims, to benefit our group and no one individual or company. Funds may be raised by the following means:
-
- Corporations/event sponsorship
- Books/software by the group
-RenderSan President & founder Bernard Edlington.

==============================

<info(at)rendersan.org>
<info(at)rendersan.org>
==============================
==============================

In an effort to stimulate growth in the Japanese Rendeman user community I am proposing a new community.
the RenderMan® community of Japan.
==============================
==============================
※This entirely for non profit, currently paid for
by my own donations. Any corporation may attend,
donate etc., however I would like this to be
vendor/platform/Renderer neutral group. I do not
wish to promote my own or any other business in
this community, this is important so we can all
benefit in a fair manner.
==============================
